   ► Долгие годы сценарист Престон Стёрджес, недовольный режиссерами, мечтал снимать фильмы по собственным сценариям. После долгих усилий ему удалось воплотить эту мечту с Великим Макгинти (написанным в 1933 г.). И поскольку фильм имел успех у критиков и публики, он пробил в голливудских устоях брешь, через которую немало сценаристов смогли просочиться в режиссуру: например, Билли Уайлдер на студни «Paramount», Хьюстон, Дассен, Дэйвз и др. на прочих студиях. Во многом по этой причине фильм должен быть спасен от забвения. Этот фильм - сатира на предвыборную чехарду и карьеризм политиков - насмехается над американским идеализмом; в особенности - над прочно прижившимся убеждением, будто у любого, даже самого ничтожного гражданина есть шанс возглавить страну. Так и происходит на самом деле, но гражданин, о котором идет речь - инфантильное и аморальное чудовище, в котором больше невежества, чем злобы; оно лихо скачет по ступенькам карьерной лестницы. Сатира усиливается, когда причиной краха главного героя становится внезапный порыв к честности.

   С формальной точки зрения приходится признать, что режиссура маловыразительна и слишком прилежна, работа с актерами - блекла, да и сама игра не блещет совершенством. Без сомнения, в этом сыграли свою роль более чем скромный бюджет и всего 3 недели, выделенные режиссеру-дебютанту на съемки. Некоторым своим любимым актерам Стёрджес найдет гораздо лучшее применение на 2-плановых ролях в более поздних фильмах. Легенда гласит, что на съемках Стёрджес-режиссер без устали писал критические записки Стёрджесу-сценаристу, на которые тот, в свою очередь, отвечал мстительными записками, адресованными режиссеру.

The tower (=God’s assembly, church) is built ἐπὶ ὑδάτων Hv 3, 2, 4; 3, 3, 5ab, ὅτι ἡ ζωὴ ὑμῶν διὰ ὕδατος ἐσώθη καὶ σωθήσεται 3, 3, 5c. ② transcendent life-giving medium, water, fig. ext. of 1, with the transition marked by J 4:10f, where (τὸ) ὕδωρ (τὸ) ζῶν (cp.    Popular creed or belief, a messianism, after the loss of King Sebastião I in Morocco in 1578, that Portugal would be saved and made great again by a returning hero who would appear on a misty morning. Until the early 19th century, various personalities who were imposters posed as a returning Sebastian and sought to be recognized as conquering heroes. Forms of Sebastianist belief have captured the imagination in northeast Brazil as well. According to some historians, Sebastianism was not limited to the 16th century or to presumed royalty, but could find a popular following that could attach to recent political figures in the 19th and 20th centuries as well. There is a vast literature about Sebastianism and its history. One of Portugal's most distinguished historians, Dr. José Hermano Saraiva, suggests that even today a Sebastiani st feeling exists in a common tendency of persons who believe that what one wants cannot happen, but at the same time hope that it will happen and will happen independently of those persons' efforts.
